Passing Notes

Everybody  –   Index Cards   –  10 Minutes

How to Run Passing Notes

  1. Explain to the group how the process will work
  2. Pass out index cards
  3. Share the prompt and ask participants to respond on their index card
  4. Collect the index cards, shuffle, and redistribute them, one to each person
  5. Give everyone a moment to read their new card (remind them that if they got their original card back, they are the only one who knows that and should not identify that to the group when reading it)
  6. Ask the group if anyone wants to share the card they have
  7. Have the person read their new card aloud, sharing any thoughts they have about it
    1. Remind everyone to speak to what is written on their current card, not what they wrote on their card

Example & Prompt

In two days, you are leading a trip for college freshmen. Before heading off, you want to hear any fears/worries anyone may have without putting anyone on the spot, but still be able to speak specifically to how the group can support those fears.

You give everyone an index card and ask them to write one fear about the trip. After collecting, shuffling, and redistributing them, you ask for volunteers to read their card, then have them explain how they connect to that fear. Then ask the group how we can alleviate or speak to that fear.

Repeat with all additional fears or continue until the group starts running out of energy.
