Analogies

Pairs  –   Pen & Paper   –  15 Minutes

How to Run Analogies

  1. Divide the group into pairs and pass out materials
  2. Provide pairs with the framework for the analogy they will be filling in
  3. Have pairs list all of the analogies they can think of within a certain time frame
  4. Once finished, they then select one of their analogies
  5. Pairs detail how their chosen analogy relates to the concep

Example & Prompt

Concept: What is the job of a facilitator?

Category of analogy: “Being a facilitator is like being a tradesperson.”

In pairs, participants would discuss whether being a facilitator is more like being an electrician, or plumber, or carpenter. Why? Why not? What relates and how?

After they land on one, they then detail all of the ways the central analogy relates to that concept.

For example, “Being a facilitator is like being a carpenter. It’s about taking raw materials and transforming them into something more useful. When you start out as a facilitator you are unable to get into the refined details of the work because you’re practicing the big foundational shapes of your trade.”

With any prompt, make sure to identify both your overall concept and the specific comparison point you want groups to use.

  • “Being a teacher is like being [a kitchen implement].”
  • “Being a facilitator is like a [Lego set].”
  • “Relationships are like [this type of furniture].”
  • “Working within this team is like [an outdoor activity].”
