Concentric Circles

Pairs  –   No Supplies   –  10 Minutes

How to Run Concentric Circles

  1. Divide the group in half (this process requires an even number of people; ideally fill in yourself to make an even number if necessary)
  2. Have one half stand in a circle facing outward, then have the other half stand in a circle surrounding them facing inward
    1. Everyone should be facing a partner after the two circles are made
  3. Give the group a prompt to discuss with their partners
  4. After time is up, have the outer circle rotate one person over
  5. Give the group another prompt to discuss
  6. Repeat steps 3-5 until you are out of prompts

Examples & Prompts

Concentric Circles works whether you want to do a number of disparate prompts in a row or create a sequence that moves participants through a journey.

Sequence Example:

  1. What’s made possible by great facilitation at your job?
  2. Same prompt, but you can’t mention anything you just said.
  3. What do you find most challenging to do as a facilitator?
  4. What is something you’ve gotten better at in the last [six months] as a facilitator?

Disparate Prompts – Icebreakers Example:

  1. What’s a band you were really into when you were a teenager?
  2. Did you grow up in a house that played music?
  3. Do you prefer talk radio/podcasts or music in the car?
  4. What’s a big band you would love to go to a small concert of?
