Counterfactuals
Groups – No Supplies – 15 Minutes
How to Run Counterfactuals
- Start with a fact or scenario that you need to analyze
- Identify the parts of the current reality you want them to imagine have changed
- Present the scenario and questions to the group
- Discuss the alternate reality of each question
- After thinking through each question, return to the original discussion
Example & Prompt
You run a small consulting business that advertises through Instagram to capture your audience and advertise your product.
You want to brainstorm with your team what the marketing plan would be if Instagram was no longer part of your business model.
- Immediate reactions to what would be different
- What are the immediate consequences? The long-term?
- What is the strategy for capturing audiences?
- What changes would there be to the marketing budget?
After they’ve discussed these possibilities (and any others they think of), use the conversation to inform the rest of your marketing discussion.
