Dot Voting
Everybody – Prepared Materials – 5 Minutes
How to Run Dot Voting
- Ensure all ideas/options that are available to be voted on are written up
- Give all participants the same number of “dots” to vote with (sticker dots, markers, etc.)
- Clarify whether people are allowed to put more than one dot per option (that is, vote more than once for the same thing)
- Set a timer for the vote
- Have everyone place their dots on the options they want to vote for
- Evaluate the final vote tally
- If doing multiple rounds, clear the dots between voting rounds
Example & Prompt
This process is particularly helpful for the following situations:
- Strategic planning
- Limiting great ideas to just a few
- Identifying where you’re going in the workshop
We have used Dot Voting at the beginning of a two-day workshop when we weren’t sure what the group really wanted to do. We generated a list together of options, and then the group voted on what focus they wanted. If they voted for very few ideas, we would have gone deeper into each; if they voted for many, we would have gone broad. It made it very clear where the energy was and helped set the agenda for the rest of the session.
