Echoed Dialogue

Pairs  –   No Supplies   –  10 Minutes

How to Run Echoed Dialogue

  1. Divide the group into pairs
  2. Provide the prompt that everyone will be responding to
  3. Have the first speaking partner begin, briefly responding to the prompt
  4. Then have the listening partner repeat back what the speaking partner said word-for-word
    1. The speaking partner may clarify or restate their statements until they word them in a way that satisfies the speaking partner to hear repeated back
  5. Repeat until the time is up (2-5 minutes) and then have the partners swap roles

Examples & Prompts

When you want participants to feel seen:

“Why do you do this work?”

“What’s something that’s challenging about your job that’s underestimated by most people?”

When you want to prompt emotional catharsis:

“What do you wish you said?” [go back and tell a story of regret, then have them rewrite the story with what they wanted to say or should have said]

“What’s an apology you wanted to make but couldn’t?”
