Journal Journey

Solo  –   Pen & Paper   –  5 Minutes

How to Run Journal Journey

  1. Provide three to five prompts for the group to write replies to, and make sure they are visible for everyone to reference throughout the writing period
  2. Have everyone prepare to write with paper and pen or a blank document
  3. Start the timer (generally we go with two minutes per question)
  4. Let the group know when two minutes have passed and when they should start wrapping up

Example & Prompt

“Recently we’ve done a lot of discussions around creating safe spaces, but I just want to take a moment and let us all reflect on what that’s meant and how that has felt for everyone. If everyone can get out a piece of paper or open a new document, I’m going to give us six minutes to answer the following three questions:

  1. What was your understanding of a “Safe Space” before our discussion?
  2. Has anything in the discussion expanded or changed your original understanding?
  3. What are your top priorities when creating a safe space for yourself?”

Bonus! How to create Journal Journey prompts

To create a series of prompts, try to consider what it would mean to take your participants on an emotional arc. You want everyone to feel like they’re discovering something about themselves so creating a progression around a central concept is key.

We also recommend paying close attention to which question you want to end on, since that will be the emotional note they leave the journal thinking about. We generally like to end on optimism, change, or looking towards the future.
