Reverse Engineering

Solo  –   Pen & Paper   –  15 Minutes

How to Run Reverse Engineering

  1. Have the participants identify a future goal they’re aiming to achieve
  2. Have everyone prepare to write by taking out paper and pen or opening up a blank word document
  3. Ask them to imagine they’re living in a future where they’ve already achieved that goal that they identified
  4. Spend 5-10 minutes listing what it took to achieve that goal, ideally working from the last steps backwards. Have them identify any pitfalls avoided, key players, etc. as they write

Example & Prompt

You are running a cohort for professional facilitators looking to improve their skills. The group meets every month. You want the group to identify a skill that they want to improve in the next three months.

You ask the group to list out all the skills they could work to improve in the next three months and then have them identify one skill (that doesn’t require resources or additional authority to work on) to work on this quarter.

Now you ask them to imagine it’s three months from now and they have that skill. How did they get it? What were the steps they took, resources they needed, support they received in order to build that skill?

Working backwards from the feeling of having that skill, what steps were taken in order to get there? Have everyone detail their response working from the end result backwards until they reach the first step.
