Four Squares

Solo  –   Pen & Paper   –  10 Minutes

How to Run Four Squares

  1. Have everyone get pen and paper
  2. Divide their paper into four quadrants
  3. Provide labels for each the quadrants
  4. Provide the prompt and perspectives out loud and have them written up so the group can see (or send in the chat if running online)
  5. Set a timer for eight minutes

Example & Prompt

The key to Four Squares is identifying the labels for the different quadrants. If you get stumped, try to focus on contrasting emotions to surface as many different reactions as possible.

“When I think about the next six months [optimistically, logically, pessimistically, emotionally] what comes to mind is…”

The four quadrants would be labeled Optimistic, Logical, Pessimistic, and Emotional. Participants would answer the question (“When I think about the next six months…”) along those different vectors.

For bonus creativity, suggest people use different modalities: bullet points, doodles, full sentences, questions only, etc.
