Stenographer
Pairs – Pen & Paper – 10 Minutes
How to Run Stenographer
- Assign participants into pairs (avoid groups of three)
- Explain the process and make sure everyone has the materials they need to take notes with
- Share the prompt and start the timer
- Give the pairs time to debrief what they wrote down/heard from the other person after both partners have done their initial share
In person, we recommend letting the group know when sharing time is up. Online, have the pairs set their own timers.
Example & Prompt
Imagine that you are a manager. You have just come back from an all-hands meeting where the senior management made some significant announcements about a new direction the organization is taking. You want to debrief with your team and hear any of their concerns, ideas, etc. and you know everyone is in a heightened emotional state immediately after the meeting.
Rather than throwing out a general question to the group (“What do you all think about the announcement that was just made?”), you break your team up into pairs and invite them to share their initial thoughts on the announcements (including any questions and concerns) with their partner, who will be capturing their thoughts on a piece of paper.
Before starting, you remind the group that their papers won’t be collected, but will be simply a starting place for larger group discussion.
