Red Team Vs. Blue Team

Everybody  –   No Supplies   –  15 Minutes

How to Run Red Team Vs. Blue Team

  1. After explaining the context of what the group will be doing, select 4-8 volunteers
  2. Split the volunteers into two teams (you can ask if people have preferences for their teams or randomly assign them)
  3. Reiterate the plan the group has identified as it currently stands
  4. Have the Red Team identify weaknesses by pointing out flaws, challenges, and foreseen issues with the plan
  5. After the Red Team shares for 2-3 minutes, pause them
  6. The Blue Team then responds to the challenges posed by the Red Team
  7. Repeat steps 5-6 until the Red Team has no more elements to raise and a helpful saturation point has been reached
  8. Optionally, open up the discussion to the entire group and ask if there’s anything that came up they want to clarify or change after witnessing the exchange

Example & Prompt

You’ve decided to do a recruitment campaign for your union. Your main tactic to recruit new members to the union is 1-on-1 organizing conversations. You want to give the group a moment to highlight their doubts, vulnerabilities, and potential pitfalls in doing recruitment 1-on-1 and you want the organizers who have more experience doing these conversations to respond to the fears and anxieties of the newer folks who are nervous.

You ask for those who are nervous or hesitant to volunteer for the Red Team, and anyone who has experience and belief in structured organizing conversations to be on the Blue Team.
