Vanishing Options
Everybody – Stickies & Markers – 10 Minutes

How to Run Vanishing Options
- Provide multiple options on sticky notes for the group to discuss
- Remove one or more sticky notes, then ask the group how they feel about the remaining options
- Swap which sticky notes are removed, adding others back in after discussions. The sticky notes can be pulled based on the type of idea, the materials necessary, or other factors
- Wrap up when the group has come to a consensus on which options should remain
Example & Prompt
You are leading a hiring committee for two positions and have narrowed the field to five candidates. Each has different strengths they offer to the company and discussions have stalled because people have picked their favorites and are unwilling to move forward.
Writing all of their names on sticky notes, you can:
- Have the group vote on the two they don’t want to move forward (voting negative can tweak the psychology that goes into voting)
- Put forth different pairs of candidates, letting the committee discuss their reactions to seeing the finalist pairs. Swap out entire pairs or just one person in the pair and allow discussion to continue to highlight the committees opinions
